Compliments

Everyone has insecurities, but when it consumes you to a point where you can’t see the beauty that others see in you it destroys your relationship with yourself and others. I would always compliment this one client, but every time he would deny it. From “no, you’re just saying that” to “stop lying to me” and “no, I’m really not”. I get it, humbling yourself once or twice is natural and sometimes I get lost for words when someone compliments me. But after complimenting him dozens of times, date after date, and him constantly pushing my words away it started to hurt knowing he was invalidating my feelings for him. To tell someone how amazing you think they are and for them to only believe your words are false is so painful.

I had another client recently who I would compliment about their amazing academic achievements, but he would always disagree. At one point I got a little frustrated. I told him to stop putting himself down and learn to say thank you when complimented. This lesson is such an important skill to learn in life. I understand taking compliments can be difficult sometimes, but please be kind to yourself and learn to accept generous words from others. People have so much kindness to give, so please don’t deny them of it. Next time someone has considerate words to share with you please try to receive them instead of pushing them away.
